definition

A check valve or non-return valve is installed in pipes which are vulnerable for backflow in flood conditions. Backflow is known to take place in toilets and sewer systems. The valve will block flow if water flows in the “wrong” direction

Co-benefits and impacts

Sewer flooding is mainly caused by hydraulic overloading of storm sewer systems, when pipes exceed their capacity, become blocked, have their capacity limited by river flooding, or a combination of these factors. There is a trend of increasing number of sewer flooding events due to climate change and urbanisation. High sea levels and heavy rains can also cause extensive flooding of streets and basements. Installing sewer backflow valves can efficiently prevent sewage overflow from entering residences.
